About a year ago my air conditioning stopped working on my 1990 coupe. I thought it was caused by the coolant (R-12) leaking out during long term storage. The auto system tried to cool down the car by turing the fan on high, but nothing but hot air was blown into the car. I planned on replacing the coolant with R-134a. But this morning when I drove the car for the first time in about 3 months the air came on and blew cold air! I guess the coolant is OK. My question is, what could be the cause of the system not working. My guess is that the compresser is turning, but maybe a relay is keeping the coolant from circulating, or maybe the clutch isn't engaging in the compresser. I don't know. I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.
we are gonna need a lot more info than that. not trying to be an butt, but it could be anything. check to see if your compressor is cycling &/or staying on. is your cooling fan coming on? dont rule out low refrigerant just yet.
Re: A wierd air conditioning problem (neverendingproject)
As far as I can tell, everything is working fine. Just no cold air most of the time. My thoughts are either the compresser is not running (clutch problem) or the r-12 is low. By the way, how do you check to see if the compresser is cycling?
When the compressor is running and ingaged the very front of it is turning with the pulley. If the front is not turning then the clutch is not ingaged. If it is ingaged feel the top of the dryer the round aluminum thing the big line goes to it should be cold and maybe even sweating. If it is I would check to see if the heater door is closing properly.
Oh yea one other thing if your converting it to 134-A be sure to call a dealer and ask them to check and see if yours has the right hoses on it for 134-A. The rubber hoses has to have a nylon liner on the inside of it for 134-A or about a year or so according to how much driving you do, the regular hose will start coming apart on the inside and contaminating the system, plugging up the tx valve as the dealers still call them.
