I need front brakes on my 92...... Last owner put s......mart stuff on it. Gone in 90 days!!. Dealer wants $700 for
rotors, pads and labor. My regular mechanic will put after market stuff on. I could use advice. Brand of pads and rotors.
You've already gotten really good advice .... here's my .02
Rotors can be turned .... but it's generally MUCH more advisable to replace. Save the old ones for emergencies.
Check The Last Detail in Atlanta for GM rotors at a good price. And there are others available also.
Pads ... much from which to choose. I went with PFZ (performance friction) available from AutoZone for around $120 (all wheels) and they carry a LIFETIME warranty ... no questions. Yes, they dust and somewhat badly BUT ONLY when I'm on a road race track or doing extremely spirited driving. I don't have a "dust problem" with normal everyday driving in either of my Vettes.
Last, save yourself some bucks and do the job yourself. There's probably a forum member near you who would be willing to help you if you're unclear of how to do it. But it's really a fairly easy job and doesn't take too long.
fwiw, I changed my 94 brakes from standard to the 13" HD (J55) brakes, did all the work myself, changed rotors & pads all around, plus new front calipers. With careful shopping I was able to do the complete changeover for just over $300.
The job is so easy, you are better off doing it yourself. As mentioneed, you can get brand new rotors for less than $100 each(if you have J55, if you have standard they are like $60 each).
Pads are anywhere from $75-$125 depending on brand and type.
The job itself is easy, shouldn't take more than an hour to do both fronts.
As mentioned above, it is extremely easy. A Helms manual would be of assistance. If you don't have a Helms, take a little of that $700. and buy one.($90) If your going to be working on your own car, it's a necessity. It's the same one the dealer uses.
