Hey guys, when I baught my 88 convertible 3 years ago my steering wheel was falling apart.. all the leather was all craked and you could even see sections of the rubber/platic steering wheel under it.
Anyway's I ripped out the leather with my hands... it almost fell apart on its own.
I've seen a lot of Steering wheels restorations, I'd really like to have one done to mine, but its like 300$ US and I'm Canadian to top it all off and it comes up to like 440, 500$ Can. Thats NUTS!!!!!
What am I suposed to do? is there a better alternative, does any one here know a good cheep place? or would it be possibe that I find a local company in my area that could do it for me?
I had the same problem with my 89.
For the cost of a stock rebuilt steering which was running around $300.
I went with a Momo wheels instead same cost.
Wheelskins are the best lace on wheel covers I've ever used so far. They lace nice and tight a gives it a little larger feel to the wheel. I used the wheelskin for awhile then bought a Momo adapter and steering wheel. By far, this is one of the best looking mods on the car and I am constantly receiving compliments on the red/black leather since my car is red. I think total for the new wheel and used adapter on Ebay was $200. Looks and feels a lot better than stock.
I just looked at Ebay and saw some very nice wheels for around $130 and adapters for $60. Still a great deal and a timeless look. I liked them so much I bought another for my El Camino in my sig. That one is grey and black. Really sharp steering wheels. Just do a search for Momo wheel.
Here is a pic of my Wheelskins, installed. (I posted a similiar pic on previous post)
You can find them at wheelskins.com. They are a great, cheap ($40) way to fix up the appearance of that worn out wheel. And the thicker feel is nice too.

Paul,
I see that you retained the tele function. Did you use the MOMO 2702 adapter? Did it come with something to fill the void in the tele **** slot. Mine looks a little bare with that big slot. You can see through to the nut. Is this right?

I don't remember the P/N but it was the Momo adapter for 84-? corvette with the tele. The gap in the tele **** slot is so deep you have to stick your head over the wheel to see down in it.
Have 87 - and am interested in your part # purchases... exactly what PN's did you get to keep everything working... thanks vinnie
My wheel is a Momo champion with a Momo adapter, I don't remember the adapter P/N, But I just ordered a Momo adapter for a 84 corvette with tele and was good to go.

:iagree:
Here's a pic of my MOMO
That's the same wheel that I've been considering for my IROC, but I was concerned about the durability of the suede. How long have you had the wheel, and how well does it seem to be holding up?
I bought a reconditioned stock wheel for my '86 about 5,000 miles ago and it is starting to come apart. The leather over the wide flat area of the two spokes (facing the driver) is bubbling up, now its like I should have buttons underneath for the horn! :banghead:
Thanks. Judging from that and MrRenoman's pictures, I guess I'm not missing anything. It just looks so unfinished.

I guess I'm overly critical, but I notice it through the windshield when standing over the driver's side wheel doing work and I though I might be missing a bit of trim.
