Simple question, is there an generic equivalent to the GM part number for a '95 LT-1. A few weeks ago whne I changed the thermostat I changed the coolant without adding the pellets. Now the water pump is slightly leaking. The book says the first step is to add them and see if it helps.
I hate going to the dealer to get a part because the sales folks decend on me and try to get me to buy a new Vette. I feel bad when I tell them that for 50 grand I can do a lot of repairs on mine. :chevy
Oh those slightly leaking OEM water pumps mounted right on top of the opti-spark. My advice is if it is slightly leaking now, it will be leaking soon, pellets or not. Here's what happens: the seal in the water pump starts to leak usually through the weep hole. Then as the leak gets worse, the bearing in the water pump gets wet and starts to fail. By this time, the weep hole has leaked enough coolant on the opti-spark to start causing problems. Fortunately, you have a vented opti and is sealed better than the earlier LT-1s, so you'll have a longer time to let the water pump leak. Start getting ready to replace your water pump. :yesnod:
I posted GM'S bulletin about the pellets some time ago. In short, they don't recommend them even though you'll see them on most part counters at your friendly dealer. Definitely stay away if your using Dex Cool.
If you have a leak after changing the t-stat, I'd go back and see why there's a leak (I'm assuming it's leaking at the t-stat housing). Maybe the rubber o-ring seal isn't seated correctly. I never use the pellets, replaced H20 pumps, radiators flushed etc, on a 96 LT1 nad a 96 LT4.
If the leak is at the H2O pump weep hole (underside of the H2O pump), then I'd replace the pump (as already stated). Those pellets are good for clogging heater cores, but not bad seals!
