Default please help on a 96

I have a pop/clunk sound when i am turning left mainly but also when i am turning right. It does not make the sound all the times, but it has made it at high speed and low speed. It also makes the sound regardless of the speed i turn the steering wheel (like turning slowly vs fast). I was told to check the bearing and both sides had a little play in them (passanger side more) so i have replaced both wheel bearing and it has not solved the problem. The bushing appear to be fine, i can not see the lower control arm bushings until i have it on a lift. This pop/clunk can be felt in the steering wheel when it occurs also. has anyone else experienced this problem? thanks

Check the following...

- Upper and Lower Ball Joints
- Tie rod ends
- Steering rack straps (make sure they're tight)
- Steering coupler between the two pieces of the steering strap
- Bearing that the steering shaft passes thru in the firewall

upper and lower balljoints feel tight as do the tie rod ends. what are the steering rack straps? the mounting points for the rack?

This sounds something I experienced on my 96 LT4. I could reproduce the sound by sitting in the drive way and turning the steering wheel in one direction or another. Incidentaly this happened to my car very early in my ownership (less than 40K mi.). I took it in for a battery replacement and had a discussion with the clerk about how it had never been to a shop for anything.... A short time later I was back there with this snap or pop noise. He looked up the tech that worked on it before and gave it to him again. The tech took me back and showed me a horizontal bar running from left front to right front. It had a threaded section with a very large bolt that was loose. They charged me $40 to tighten it. I have since put over 30K mi. on it with no further issues. I don't think I will ever know how such a critical part in the steering system could have gotten that loose.

can you please explain what this large threaded rod is? I can make the sound while rolling slowly but rarely does it do it when the car is not in motion. thanks

Sounds like the tie rod ends.

The straps that secure the ps rack are simply metal "straps" with rubber bushings that hold the rack in place. If they come loose, the rack can move and cause a noise. Unusual, but possible.
