Default T-stats

Can/should a 160 or 180 t-stat be installed if no chip or power programmer is being installed?( '95 LT1) Also, what is the difference between hypertech power programmer and the hypertech power tuning module? Is one any better than the other for an engine that will only be modified with a K&N filter TB bypass, MAT relocation and a power effects exhaust system? So much to learn, so little time. Thanx

You should be able to put a 180 degree t-stat without having to worry about your car going into open loop(warm up mode). 160 will be too cold and you'll need to reprogram to compensate. From everyone I've talked to, reprogramming is useless until you start in on major mods, like heads and a cam. In fact, most of the guys I know, including myself, have run slower at the track with aftermarket programs and had to sacrifice a decent idle to get slower.

I have 160 in my 86, not a single problem, but it doesnt get that cold in SC or LA. It does lower operating temps by itself without a fan program.
However, if you drive that car during winter in CO, i would probably stick with 180.

If you are having overheating problems, clean the area between the condensor and radiator first.
Then flush and refill all the coolant.
That and a new stat, whichever one, should lower temps by 10-15F.
For a more permanent fix, you could go with a Meziere Electric Water pump, and/or switch wired to the main fan.

Thanx for the reply. Ads are so confusing and they promise the moon. It's nice to have a place to go to to get some real answers from guys who have used the products.

On my '86, since it was so hard to get parts in Japan, the fan relay was long replaced with a now non functioning Japanese one, ghetto wired into it. I ended up having my dad send me an adjustable fan controller made by Empire, I believe. It's the house brand any of the major auto parts places carry for fans and such. The make this part that you wire to your fan directly to the battery with a fuse inline. Then you mount a temp probe to the radiator and you can adjust the temp on the unit. I used to have mine come on in Okinawa at about 180. This and a 180 t-stat, the temp never got about 195 even sitting in Japanese traffic(2 hrs to go 1 mile) in tropical 95 degree heat.
Probably a good idea is to replace the radiator cap too as these wear out along with the other suggestions made in previous posts.
