Long story short, im 17 and im putting together a race corvette, same 350, with i think z51 suspension aand a roll cage. I just got a lot of the sensors together and everything hooked up after we droped the engine. A big thanks to this guy i met, he dropped off his 86 and left it with us for a week, while he went to flordia to get married. anyway i have the positive battery terminal with two other small wires leading off it. one of the wires has a plug two three inches down, on the other side is a semi smaller wire, i hooked everything up and started it, it idle and then the wire on the other side of the plug started smoking and it melted majorly. i unhooked it and tried to start the engine again and it wouldnt fire at all, thinking its to do with spark and fuel. Any suggestions to i can drive this car a little beforer the snow flies.!???? :auto:
Re: 1987 With melting wires!!!!! (crazydriver7686)
Sounds like the hot lead to the ECM, MAF & Fuel Pump Relay. It's protected by a fusible link and when it shorted, that's what created the smoke. You need to find the short - probably some insulation worn away and the wire is touching metal - patch it up and solder in a new link. Don't try to get by without the link, you'll just burn up components or start a fire.
I AM THE DAD OF THE 17 YR OLD ABOVE, HE HAS TAKEN A BASKET CASE, LITTERALLY, AND GOT IT RUNNING. HE HAD THE MAF PLUG UPSIDE DOWN. THIS CAUSED THE PROBLEM. CHANGED IT BACK AND EVERYTHING WORKED FINE, LUCKY HE DIDN'T TRASH THE MAF.

Wow! That put power to ground. Good thing the fusible link was there and that the ECM isn't fried (since the ground is through the ECM). Glad to hear he fixed it, though he might want to check it real quick for any trouble codes.
As far as I know it shouldn't have fried that wire, it just shouldn't have worked at all if the circut was connected improperly, the check engine light chould have come on and given the trouble code for the MAF. Sounds to me like something else was grounding out somewhere, might want to check a little further just to be on the safe side
