I just bought a $40 ALDL cable from http://www.customefis.com, and bought a USB-to-serial adapter per the online instructions.... When I setup WinALDL and plug in the cable(s), I get an "Okay" reading for the com port (ie Com1 is active) but no data. I've also tried using several ECM files in WinALDL just for the heck of it and my ground and data plugs are in the appropriate ALDL sockets (A and E respectively). I am using the newer version of the -165 ECM, whatever that part number is... -826 or something?
Should I assume it is the cable I bought, or are there other common caveats to this process?
I also tested the A/E ALDL plugs with a voltmeter and found an electric potential... so I'm assuming by that the circuit is continuous?
Let me know if I'm making the right assumptions here, before I ask CustomEFIS to send me a new cable...
Did you put a 10k ohm resistor between pins A+B? Your data could use pin E or M on the ALDL plug.
I didn't know I had to use a resistor with this cable? Well I guess that could be an option... but my diagnostics port does not have an 'M' plug (meaning, there's no wire there).
Technically, this is an `84 style ALDL port with an `86 ECM- but the data port is still 'E' because I checked. :D I will look into using the resistor, thanks.
Re: WinALDL / Cable problem (another one): (Ramanstud)
I went to the site that you bought the cable from and they only mention connecting two wires so you'll need the 10k resistor between A+B to put the computer into diagnostic mode so it will sent out all the data. Remove the resistor when scanning is done. You could have trouble with the USB adapter too. They don't always seem to work.
I had trouble with USB adapters- The only one that worked for me was from Radio Shack, like $40.... it must have software with it too, just a "plug" conversion wont work. Also, your cabke may be dependant on the DB-9 supplying voltage and your adapter may not be supplying it.
