Youd have to cut open the front Y pipes, get the material out, then weld them back together.

We dont talk about gutting precats, we talk about gutting the main cat. We usually replace the front Y pipe with something aftermarket.

The thing to do is to buy a precatless front y pipe with high flow main cat from Ecklers. It's supposedly 49 state legal and easy to bolt in. And then you can buy a new rear y pipe with crossover and muffler eliminators with black recatangular LT1 tips. Then you have a new exhaust that sounds really mean.

Some people ram a pipe through it till the innards are busted out; or you can just get a cheap hi-flow cat from Summit Racing that will still give a good sound and even pass emissions.

If you are going to change the front Y, use lots of Liquid Wrench on the three bolts and let stand overnight to avoid breaking those rusted devils.

Yes, we do. Lots of people cut them open, gut them, and weld em shut.

I had an exhaust shop just cut the pre cats out and weld in pipe when I had the high flow main cat installed. Works fine and sounds great.

PS - Use the caps lock to turn them off. Indicates you're yelling.

1990Corvette, being that you are also from TX, how strict are the laws regarding gutting/altering Cats here? How aggressively do they monitor any such changes, and are the penalties/fees high for getting caught doing the abovementioned changes? I just moved to Tx and would like to also makes such changes. Thanks.

I've never seen a "sniffer" while getting an inspection ;) I'm in Austin though, usually a little more lenient on laws than Dallas/Houston. Half the time I don't think they even look at the exhaust.

Example: My '81 Vette had no headlights (I installed them that night), no horn (guy said "just tell me that you're putting it on tomorrow ) , bad exhaust leak we didn't fix till about 2 weeks later, balding tires, and I still got inspection
Then again, my '95 was perfect except no HIGH-BEAMS and I got denied, paid $10 for nothing  :mad good thing too, because I really need those high-beams driving around with thousands of other people on roads with lights every 5 feet.

You're in the clear no matter what you do, but I'd at least have an empty cat on there :yesnod:
