in the process of removing the exaust to make way for the new transmission, i have managed to snap a header stud.
My current situation is that the car is assembled, and in running condition.
Question one: do i have to remove the header from the block to extract the broken bolt
two: how difficult is it to remove a header in the driveway?
3. Where can i find a new stud, or a suitable replacement?
In advance i thank you for the help, as it is greatly needed in this situation.

Re: need advise: broken header stud on 86 (perryroger86vette)
I don't think there's any easy way around this. If you can't grip the stud and pull it out, you're going to have to drill out the center and use an easy out to extract the remaining threads.
I wouldn't be worried so much for the header removal, but the fact that you might have to remove the head to drill the stud :(
Clarification, i have broken the stud that is on the exit end of the stock header pipe. and wondering if there is a way around taking the header off and removing the stud via heating the flange with a torch

You could possibly heat it with a propane torch. Drilling out wouldn't be that big of a deal. Just go to Home depot and replace the bolt.
Or you can just take out the remaining bolts, and drop the exhaust. Then while heating it pull on the exhaust that you dropped. I don't see why you'd need to remove the header.
Do you have a die grinder/cut off tool that you can use to shave the stud head flat?

no die grinder
i am thinking of finding a shop to heat it with a oxy-acyteline torch and then using a vise grip to remove it
That is a good plan and worth a try. Under no circumstance should you get an easy out any where near this problem or your problem will be doubled (broken bolt and broken easy out). The problem with easy outs is they tend to try and expand the already stuck bolt. If the broken bolt will not come out with the torch and the vice grip, then drill it out using the step drill method (start small and keep working up). Then once you are close to the thread try using a small chisel or old screwdriver to colaps the broken bolt. the worst case senierio for drilling is you may have to install a helicoil.
I have used this method and had good results, including removing a broke exhast bolt from thr head, lucky for you it is just the colector.
