Default Transmission cooler

Here's one that does not come up often. I hear many people talking about these coolers to prolong the life of the transmission especially when installing torque converters? What are these coolers and where do you get them? Pictures of an installed one would be great. Thanks. :seeya

What i'm talking about is an external cooler, that works better than the stock cooler.
It looks like a small radiator, and all ive seen sit in front of the radiator like the condensor does. The 700/4L60 does not react well when the fluid gets cooked from constant abuse of driving hard or driving alot in hot weather. The higher the stall of the TC, the more heat is generated.

B&M makes a good one, but I havent done much research on the different brands.

In this picture my tranny cooler is kind of hanging there waiting to be affixed. The smaller cooler is my oil cooler. A tranny cooler is a good way to extend your tranny's life.

Yeah, I saw the b&M one for sale and it's quite cheap. I have two more questions though. How hard is it to install and are there any negative effects in cold climates? Thanks again. :steering:

I just installed one on my '87. It was a breeze compared to removing all the screws to get to the radiator. Be sure you play around with placement of the cooler before you use the attaching zip-lock-like hardware. I found out the hard way I didn't have enough hose to make both connections. If you're in the same situation, be sure to ask for ATF compatible hosing because the ATF would eat through fuel line hose fairly quickly. Best of luck...

Not that hard. You just need to undo one of the connections to the radiator and splice in the cooler between the tranny and the radiator. I don't think being too cold is a problem with tranny fluid.

I'm using an aftermarket cooler on my '84. Used it the last couple of years. With no problems.
Guess they were original equipment on alot of vette's.
But not mine. Of course.
Good Luck

Hmm, I just installed a Th400 with a 1800-2200rpm TQ converter stall, I dont remember which one it was but it was between those two. ANyways, seeing it that the Th400 has 3/8's lines compared to the 5/16 line of a 700r4, I assume it would be better to go with a external cooler. But does it affect the radiators cooling power? From the heat transfer?
