Default 84 Alternator Issue?

As I was filling the tank with gas my 84 stalled. Started the car, no problem. First traffic light, red alternator light came on and read 11.5 volts. This never happened before. When I drive the car at normal speed, alternator reads 13.5 13.7. Stop for a traffic light and volts dwindle from 13.5 to 11.9, but car does not die. I took the car on the parkway and opened it up, and also for the first time it was hesitating, but only temporarily. When I park the car volts read 13.5 and then dwindle to 12.0/ 11.9 volts. I'm sure it is the alternator, but what component within the alternator is on it's way out?

It's probably the voltage regulator. Since it is internal to the alternator , you will need to take the alternator off the car to repair. There is an excellent guide to repairing the alterrnator in the c-4 technical tips section of the forum. You may want to consider upgrading your alternator to a 124 amp unit instead of your 105 amp that is sooo prone to failure. There is also an excellent technical piece in the technical tips section about this upgrade. I replaced mine in my 86 with one that fits a 93 vette and it has been great so far. BTW, it cost me $31 US at Advance auto after core charge for a remanufactured unit. Good luck.
