I checked search and found nothing - Can someone explain how to replace the stock coil on the engine. I am installing an Excel coil.
Thanks in advance for replies..
Hi Mike, On the LT1, on the pass side front of the engine is where the coil sits. Hopefully, your coil is the same shape as the GM coil. If it isn't, I'd go back and get either a MSD or GM OEM coil. Don't get caught up in a "the higher the voltage the better" thing. Too much voltage is not good for the OEM opti. The MSD Blaster offers just a little more voltage. I got mine from Thunder Racing (vendor on the left column) and it is the same shape as the OEM. Don't scrape that dielectric stuff off the mounting unless you get some to replace it.
Do a search about this stuff in regards to converting to a '96 LT4 coil. They are a better design and will fit.
Passenger side head on the front. That power steering resevoir is going to drive you nuts. You'll remove the coil and ignition module as a unit. Drill out rivets and go from there.
What about the 96 coil is better, and what wiring changes do you need to make to use it?
It isn't just the 96 coil, well maybe, but more specifically the LT4 coil. GM had to make some changes to it for the OBDII requirements and also so it could provide power well above 6K RPM. I think it is changing the connectors or some such thing. Ask around more because somebody on here posted a big thing about that. If I hadn't done the LTCC conversion I would have gone that route.
Thanks for the reply's - I got the part, looks easy compaired to the headlight rebuild that I did last week. My antenna stuck yesterday and I just smiled. Another project...never ending battle for the pure joy.. :steering:
Hello! Is there anybody in there? (Nod to Pink Floyd)
I just love EIGHT year old threads. This gives me a chance to thank people who have long since forgotten what they posted.
Here goes:
Thanks to all the posters on this thread!! I'm replacing my coil (93 Vert) with a Mallory coil. When I saw the bolt poking through the Power steering pump bracket, I thought, "That can't be the right bolt." But this thread came through and reassured me, I'm doing the right thing. This weekend I'm replacing the coil and the wires, and seeing if I dodged a bullet or if I have to replace the Optispark,.
Maybe eight years from now, when our cars are true classics worth $50K each, someone will read this thread and send another note saying, "If you can afford a C4, you can surely afford $1,000 to have someone change your coil for you."

Well....
My multimeter is telling me that some of the wires are getting no spark and other wires are getting strong and weak current, (intermittently), so I'm replacing the wires. I thought I might as well replace the coil at the same time.
Next on the list is the optispark if the above doesnt work.
I havent tested the coil, maybe I should check that too. I just assumed that the coil was 18 yrs old and a new one would be a 'treat' for the ignition system.
