I have built the 2 transistor interface cable for moates software. I see there is an old version and a newer version.
Will this 2 transistor interface work with either program ?
Thanks
I can tell you the I have gotten it to work fine with that same interface. But, I've only tried ECM852. Also, it works intermittently in windows, safest to boot to DOS.
I've been trying to utilize the moates software with my '90, but have been unable to establish communications.
Maybe I'm going to extreme using sub-approved harware (an old 8088 dual floppy laptop) booting with DOS 3.2 (I understand that the recommend system is a '386).
It runs the demo display fine (although with slow screen refresh rates). But when I switch to diagnostic mode, I am unable to establish communications and the keyboard / screen locks up - requiring a reboot.
I checked the Troubleshooting section on the AKM web site, but it doesn't look applicable to my situation.
1) I am running a 8088 laptop running MS-DOS v3.2
The check list assumes Windows 95/98
2) The moates web site states: "Most people have problems running the program with any OS newer than Win98"
I borrowed a friends laptop running XP-Professional - same lack of communications as above - requiring reboot.
3) The moates web site states: To make a boot-disk for MS-DOS 6.22, Win95, or Win98, please refer to this site: Boot Disks
The implication is that the program and interface cable will work using MS-DOS
I am currently running MS-DOS v 3.2
Will that version of DOS provide the necessary info to support the program and interface?
I tried the supplied link, but it no longer works.
4) The ALDL test from TTS is a windows only program - I can't run it on my dos laptop to test out the system.
5) Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips for the serial port connection when running MS-DOS - or do I need to scrounge up a system running W98 so that I can run the various communications diagnostic routines?
I'm not sure if this helps. Probably not, but I have an old Acer laptop that runs a pentium-75, it can't seem to work with any of the software. But, it talks to modems fine via COM1. WinALDL, Moate's and Datamaster do not work.
But, I plug in my Dell Latitude 366 MHz and everything works fine. Can't explain. I spent hours trying to figure it out, messing with the BIOS settings and such. No luck. Maybe some brands just use bad UARTS with the COM ports that don't get along with the funky baud rates.
Did you switch from default offline setting to diagnostis setting. Have you tried all 4 port settings in the default window. I believe if you change a port you must reboot program before it works.
Yea. As I said, this other laptop just wouldnt work with ANY software, windows or DOS. But, would talk to a 9600 baud modem no problem. I was using the El-Cheapo 2-transister interface. Maybe some of these laptops just don't like a non-standard signal. The Dell worked fine. In fact I bought another Dell off of Ebay just for car tuning use, and will set it all up in the garage with a Craig Moate adapter and chip burner :D
