I'm not disagreeing (I don't know enough about it to have an opinion one way or the other) but just for the sake of educating myself why do you think GM decided on the stall speed they did for the stock TCs? I know at certain performance junctures, trade-offs have to be made. What advantage do you suppose GM saw in settling on a 15-1600 stall speed as opposed to a 2000 or 2400? Didn't I read somewhere that one year Vette had a stock TC with a stall speed actually around 2000? If this is true, why the blip? Why bump it up one year and then bring it back down in subsequent years? Thanks...
yeah the 85 and 86 L98s both had a ~2000 stall TC
I dont actually know the reason why GM went down to 14-1500 stall for later models.
Hmmm... I just bought my 88 Z51 a few months ago. On the street & 60 degree night, I was able to stall up to 2000rpm-- (with WORN out tires). I just thought that this was the norm. I was told that the trani was rebuilt. Sounds like they put in a different TC.
Hmm, and darkredlt1 replied above that he has swapped a S10 2000 stall speed TC into his 94 so they apparently still use it in trucks...
I would guess that has to do with towing capacity, you would want the truck to get up to a torque peak very quickly so that you could really move when the light turns green or whatever.
Thanks, Vader. I suspected something like that might be the reason. It's one thing if you have the knowledge and tools to do the swap yourself but I wonder if in a case like mine where I'd have to pay someone to do it, if another 400rpm on the stall speed would be worth the expense...

Re: stock Torque Converter (vader86)
when guys are doing those great burnouts, they usually have a line-lock installed, which is something entirely different
Standing on the brake pedal accomplishes the same thing
DUHHHHH
Hmmm. Eloquent and well thought out response. My point was that you are being a little presumptious in saying that they have line locks. The VAST majority don't.
