I thought it was the AIR pump - so I removed the vanes today. I re-installed it and the noise is still there. Can a water pump make a noise like that? Maybe the belt tensioner?
Ended up being the pulley on the water pump. I took off the frisbee about 6 mo. ago and I didn't use washers between the nuts and the pulley. apparently the nuts bottom out on the stud before the pulley is tight.
Try the hose in the ear trick. You can use it like a stethescope to pin point the noise. The sound will echo up the tube while filtering out the surrounding noises. I use this all the time. I usually use the hose that I use to siphon gas. :smash:
thats a bearing. take the belt off and start the car. If the noise is no longer there then you know for sure it's a bearing. O make sure the car is cool when you start it and don't let it run for more than a few min. After all the water pump and alt will not be running. Will not hurt it just that the ign. will be running all off the bat.
My rear bearing on the AIR pump was noisy - I thought it was the altenator until I used the hose to listen to each part - give it a try, it works really well.
As suggested, remove the belt and run the engine for a few min. If the noise is gone, it's one of the accessories. Take each one and spin it, push it, pull it, etc. I had a similar noise (not as bad, though) a few weeks ago after a dyno run. The water pump had a slight grinding noise when I spun it but it deflected about 1/4 inch when I applied pressure to it. It never leaked a drop but turned out to be the problem. If the noise is still there you have other issues and not good ones.
