I just bought my 2nd Corvette!!!!! :hurray: Its a red 84 coupe.
Now I have twin 842.
Its a auto with Z51, heavy duty radiator, 3.07 gears,etc... It has headers, high flow cat, rear H pipe, and some sort of performance mufflers.
My question is in regards to the coolant temp. My blue 84 manual trans non-Z51 runs about 197-200 degs. My new red one runs about 170 degs except when not moving then it goes up to 200ish.
Whats up with that? Most auto cars that my friends have run about 205-215degs.
I know there are other mods to the car (accel super coil) but what makes it run so cool? I want my blue one to run that cool. Any ideas?
Re: GOT A NEW ONE!!!!! Question about it...... (ffvetteman)
it probably just has a lower stat and a good fan to keep it in normal ranges at idle (less coolant flow and air current). But under load and driving you have more airflow through the radiator (and higher coolant flow due to RPMs) which lower the temps considerably. I have a 180* stat in mine and it usually runs 178-ish while moving and 190-200-ish in stop & go / short idle.
Switch the T-stat to stock and I'll bet you're back up into the 200+ range all around (but why?).
EDIT: By the way... Congrats on the purchase!!!
Re: GOT A NEW ONE!!!!! Question about it...... (ffvetteman)
Early Z51 spec cars got oil coolers. If it's anything like my '86's oil cooler, it's a true oil cooler, the kink that runs coolant through the adapter, but the kind that runs oil to a small radiator in front of your main one. My '86's oil never got above 185 even in sweltering tropical heat.
Re: GOT A NEW ONE!!!!! Question about it...... (ffvetteman)
I have a 180 degree 'termostat' in my 84....
It must REALLY be about a 165 degree theremostat because that's about the temp I get going down the road. Moves up to 180 -190 sitting in traffic.
Then cools right back down when I start moving.
I think those thermostats coming from one of 'our neighbors' should be marked +/- 20 degrees of the stamped temperatue.
This is the THIRD cheap thermostat I've gotten that isn't even close to it's rated markings.
I quess QC just ain't what it used to be before the 'me' generation and everybody being fornicated up on drugs.
YEAH, I'm a 'baby boomer' but WE were raised by parents that came through the depression AND WWII and they made sure WE were disciplined to 'DO IT RIGHT'. Whatever "IT" is.
WooHooo... THAT should start a fight or two this morning......

I've been very lucky in that both 180* t-stats I put in my '86 and '88 have been spot on, at least assuming the temp guage on the dash is correct. You can watch the car warm up to 180, and as soon as it does, you can watch it drop back down a few degrees when the t-stat opens up. I used whatever brand Autozone carries, so they're nothing exotic.
