My car idles roughly sometimes. Occasionally, it will be smooth, but it's generally rough. Very rough. The car will stumble nearly to the point of stalling. The idle sometimes hovers around 1200 rpm instead of the 800 it was when it wasn't doing this. The car will occasionally stall. The engine will just die. This does not matter what gear I am in, as I've had it stall in neutral, park, drive, and even reverse. Reverse! What can cause something like this? Has anyone had a problem like this before?
My, 92, did the same thing. I, replaced the opti with a dynaspark, now all seems well. It, would shut off doing 60 mph and sometimes star right back up. Other times I, had to crank it a bunch of times and then it would start. Put the dynaspark on about 300 miles ago.
Think that just about covers it. (might have missed a couple). Start with those. This is not a simple subject and often there are multiple things going on at the same time, so no one thing will fix it. A good manual will take you through all the checks and eliminate them one at a time.
Thanks everyone. I guess tomorrow afternoon, it's time to put the car in the back and check everything on the list. I don't think it's a fuel problem, as it does it only sometimes and not all the time, but I also don't recall ever even paying attention to the injectors, even when I bought the car 7,000 miles ago. The car now has 121K miles. That'll be the first thing I'll check.
