My ZF started seeping oil and its seeping at where it mates to the bell housing. There is a thin aluminum plate or shim as some would call it, and the oil is seeping at that point. It is not seeping from the engine side of the bell housing yet.
What's the most likely cause of this leak? I am thinking the front bearing retainer seal or possibly the countershaft seal. Anyone out there run into a similar problem. I figure if I have to take it out to fix the leak I am going to replace the clutch with a Mcleod street twin, seeing how I am in there. Or at least some form of a performance clutch.
It sounds like the input shaft bearing seal is leaking, time to pull ZF, if your Vette is stock and you have a LT1 I would use a new GM clutch as I have seen that aftermarket clutch`s have a stiffer release and makes the clutch peddle MUCH harder (TRAFFIC SUX) but if that does not brother you there are several companies that make TRICK pressure plates. Let us know what you do and how it works out as my 96 LT4 has 60,000 miles on the stock clutch and I can hear some throw out bearing noise (not vey loud, YET) when I hold the clutch in then release in netural and listen.Good Luck

Do you have any tranny fluid at the bottom of the inspection plate? Just for grins, I'd put some oil dye into the oil (engine) and see if it appears in the same place. This will rule out any engine oil leaks if it doesn't appear.

Tom's car is far from a stock LT1. He is running a supercharged 396ci LT4.
My 91 has two seals for the imput. the input rearing retainer is two piece. so there is a "O" ring sealing the two retainer sections and a lip seal in the retainer sealing the input shaft.
I used to think it was throwout bearing noise too. but futher research indicates it's a front bearing or something like that.....
