i have an 86 coupe that i have had for about three months. on a bumpy or rutted road the car gets very twitchy. the steering feel tight and i have jacked up the front end and feel no loose motion either in the wheel bearings or the balljoints. the tie rods are tight as well. the previous owner told me about the problem before i bought the car . he said that the problem began when he replaced the rear tires. i replaced the shocks all around and it helped a lot. again ,i only notice it on rough or rutted (from heavy trucks) roads. is this normal for this car and am i just not used to a vette? btw, the front tires are about 3/4 worn and the treadwear is very uniform. Any help/ suggestions are much appreciated.
Remember that when you jack the car up, you are changing the suspension geometry in the jacked up position, and a loose tierod end or ball joint might seem tight...
Front tire pressure makes a big difference in the way my 91 Z07 handles. If it gets a little low the car tends to wander on the road. I was told that is one reason that GM switched to a narrower front tire in newer C4s.
