I've got a bad radio relay in my 86 Coupe, can someone out there give me the lowdown on changing it out???? Where is it located in reference to the radio? Understand it's under the dash. Need all the help I can get.
Re: HELP!! HELP!!Radio Relay Bad 86 Coupe (LoneStarSoldier)
I've heard that it's on the drivers side under the dash but I don't know the exact location. Seems like there was a thread on this a couple of weeks ago. You may want to look in the archives. BTW, how do you know you have a bad relay. I'm curious because I have an intermittent lost of the right side both front and rear when i hit a bump and I haven't found the loose connection yet. good luck!
Re: HELP!! HELP!!Radio Relay Bad 86 Coupe (dwestsr)
I was just told by an individual who junks them out that the radio relay is behind the information center. Remove it and it is behind. Can anyone else varify that information. Spoke to Doctor Don this afternoon, he works on the radio's on the workbench not in the car.but He gave me the same basic information. He also said that you could use any 4 point relay for this, doesn't have to come from GM. Dwestsr ask how I new it was a relay, I described the problem and Doctor Don diagnosed it. I have power to both the clock and the tuner. The station frequencies appear as normal even the stero indicator, just no sounds. He said it was definately a relay problem. :flag
Re: HELP!! HELP!!Radio Relay Bad 86 Coupe (LoneStarSoldier)
Is there no sound from your radio yet it turns on and lights up ?
If so check your ctsy/clk 15 amp fuse. Test it,don't just look at it. If that is good and the radio fuse is good than it is probably amp relay.
Relay is located behind passenger dash panel. If you still have the crash pad than trying to access from below is maybe your best option, though it is WAY EASIER if you can remove the pad. If you have an aftermarket passenger panel just remove it and look on the left side of dash support brace. The relay is attached with two 7mm screws. If you get at it from below stick your arm through the mess of wires and try to unplug harness from relay and plug in new one and let it hang around.
Good Luck
Re: HELP!! HELP!!Radio Relay Bad 86 Coupe (AGENT 86)
I purchased a after market glove box that replaces the crash pad. I had dreaded installing it because it required the removal of the dash pad and relocation of the vats module. Where is the amp relay located in reference to the vats module?

I replaced all my speakers with everything. Realys and all. Including enclosers. Like $139.95 ea. and well worth it.
All from Mid America.
System works great now.
Go sounds.
