Default How does this sound? (motor combo advice needed)

I am going to modify my 96CE as it has a leaking head gasket. My plan is: long tube headers and a cat back exhaust, 4.10 gears in the back, different cam, possibly LT4Hotcam or Comp Xtreme 07-305-8. ported stock heads or AFR's.

I have a couple questions. I am totally new to computer controlled vehicles. Will I have to modify the computer for this? Any advice on how? What do I do about the O2 sensors? Would anyone recommend a different cam? And any other mods I might want to make now, while I am into the motor this far?

Thanks for the help!

Eric

Those are some heavy mods so yes, some PCM will need to be tuned in. Maybe a fuel pressure regulator also. Make sure your longtubes have O2 taps or you will need O2 sims. Good luck.

Yes, youll need a reprogram for best idle/power/etc.

It will run with the stock program, it just wont run like it can.

With headers, you MIGHT end up needing heated O2 sensors, but dont buy those until you have to, she may run perfectly fine with the stockers.

Everything else looks good. Look up Nathan Plemons' in a search, his 92 has very similar mods to this, if you want to see dyno results theyre in his profile i think.

For the computer reprograming, send it to Ed Wright, and you'll have good tune.

Hmmm... Nathan appears to be MIA right now. Anyone else with a similar combo that may be willing to talk to me about some details??

96 cars already have heated O2 sensors. O2 sims are only used in place of the two rear O2 sensors when you’re not running cats. You will definitely need reprogramming (dyno tuning would be best). What are your uses/goals for the car? It’s kinda hard to recommend a cam without knowing what you’re looking for. There are tons of cam choices out there…

Yes, you will need a PCM tune and DON't do a mail order tune. Ed Wright is good but Mail order is marginal at best. I had his program for 3 years and had constant problems with knock. I bought LT1 edit and had a dyno tune done and put 30extra rwhp down. Do not mess with a fuel pressure regulator either. Ed Wright will also tell you that. Once you start changing your program you don't want to mess with fuel pressure. With the hot cam and GOOD ported LT1 heads you should be able to put down 370+ to the rear wheels if you are a 6sp. I stress a good port job. I've seen guys put down much less.
