just installed headers, now service engine light is on
after installing the longtubes, i had the exhaust welded up with out the cats. is this what is throwing the code? i haven't pulled the code yet, but i didn't think that running it with no cats would cause it to do that. also, can i just have the factory chip reprogrammed to turn the light off? car is in the sig. thanks

You probably disconnected all the emissions stuff ( airtubes, airpump etc, ). Yes you can have this deleted with a new chip. Ski down it burns chips at a very reasonable cost. He will also have fans come on at cooler temp.

thanks for the replies. i did disconnect the airtubes, but i did not unplug any of the electrical from them. i just disconnected the hoses. this shouldn't give me a light should it? thanks
Re: just installed headers, now service engine light is on (tim87)
I'll bet its code 32. EGR problems. Also, on the 92 the O2's are 1 wire non heated. If the headers located the O2's farther down the system than the original location, they may not be getting hot enough. That causes its own problems. You may have to go to a heated sensor(s).
Re: just installed headers, now service engine light is on (C Webb)
Here's another possibility from someone who's got headers. ;)
Depending on where the bung for your O2 sensor is, it may not be seeing enough heat to 'go active'.
My hooker headers have a bun on cyl 7 only...that meant it only got signal from one rather than four cylinders.
I relocated the O2 sensor to a bung at the collector. At the same time I switched over to a heated (3 wire) O2 sensor as that was too far away from the heads to get hot enough to operate correctly.
Re: just installed headers, now service engine light is on (C Webb)
IIRC, it was about $70. Search google for 'three wire O2 header weather pak', there's a guy with a Camaro that lists the GM partnumbers for the sensor and connector. You'll need an ignition switched 12v source, I used the hot 12v line from the distributor.
Re: just installed headers, now service engine light is on (C Webb)
:iagree: I concur - it is probably code 32 (EGR). This was a problem on my 90 when I gutted the cat . Funny thing was, I got rid of the code when I added headers
I put the bung on the collector and went with a heated O2 sensor. This link will help:

Be like me, take you dash apart a tape over the light :D :D I'm know I'm going to get flanked for this, but I'm not getting my computer reflashed for installing a manual fan switch.
Re: just installed headers, now service engine light is on (C Webb)
i talked to the guy at exotic muscle this morning and he didn't seem to think that heated o2 sensors would help much on a 92. the light won't come on until about 30 minutes of high way driving. which led him to believe that it was the egr. i did cap the place where the tubing from the passenger side manifold goes into the back of the intake. i capped the back of the intake there. he said that would throw the code and the only way to fix it is to burn a chip. sound right? or would the heated o2's fix it? if a chip will fix it, what is the absolute cheapest way to do it. i hate to have a custom chip made just to delete the egr function! thanks
Re: just installed headers, now service engine light is on (C Webb)
The easiest thing to do is pull the codes and see if it is the o2 or the egr.
I eliminated my egr, and throw a code VERY RARELY. It only happens at highway cruising speed when I come off the gas slightly.
If you have headers, and no cat, than more than likely your o2 isn't getting hot. If you have the cat, it will help hold heat in the pipe.
Re: just installed headers, now service engine light is on (C Webb)
I couldn't identify what year your car is, but on my 86 you can use the ALDL to see if the engine is going into closed loop. If it is, then the 02 is active, but that still doesn't mean it's cycling properly.
I suspect 02 also. The best thing is to use a ScanTool or Diacom, etc., to see exactly what's going on with the engine. They're a good investment because you'll find yourself using it over and over.
Re: just installed headers, now service engine light is on (C Webb)
did i mention that it doesn't come on everytime. just after i have been driving on the interstate or highway for about 30 minutes. then it pops on. doesn't this sound like egr? oh yeah, the car is a 92. thanks for the help.
