My son and I went to the Gainesville raceway and ran my old 88 coupe auto, stock I think. my son made the first run out of the box was a 14.04ET not bad, but dad had to show him how to do it and I made the second run at 14.02 :D We unpluged the fuel pressure reg. My son made the third run and they would not let us run any more that night  They said he needed a helment because the last run was a 13.97 :D :D My question is their any thing else I can do and stay stock to go faster?
Hell yeah... another stocker in the 13s. :D What were your 60' times looking like? Spinning much? Did you leave the car in D and let the car shift or did you shift yourself? About at what RPM was it shifting at?
On your power steering pump there is a large steel disc that we call the "frisbee" around here. You can remove that and use some washers to take up the excess room in the bolts that will be created to get rid of some parasitic loss. It was there to be used as a dampner in like 88 and 89, but later L98 years realized it was unnecessary and didn't come with it.
Congrats for doing so well on the first time out...very nice. I suspect you have 3.07 gears since you got into the 13s bone stock.
For the stock A4 in an '88 Vette those are good short times. I don't think you can improve much on that with stock tires or stock TC.
To add some cheap hp:
-toss the "frisbee" from the front of your wate pump pulley, 10hp
-K&N air filter with cut lid, 10hp
-160 deg stat and aux fan switch, ~10hp
-cut-back spark plugs (details on my site, see sig. below), 8-10hp
Remove the spare & jack for ~45lb weight reduction; go to the strip with 1/4-1/3 tank of fuel for ~90lb weight reduction. Remember that each 80lb of weight reduction is worth about 10hp in the 1/4 mile.

I thought it was for 100lb you drop you go a tenth of a sec faster. Hell I like yours better anyway. Well let me see here already droped the spare no more jack and I always have a 1/4 tank of gas. Thats an extra 10 horse at the track for me. :hurray:
vetteguy216, I just ran some numbers for a 300chp, 3350lb car through the equations on my site and it took a 100lb change to equal a 10chp change, i.e. ~1mph in trap speed.
My bad. :bb ..you are absolutely right..thanks for the correction.
congrats  It's always been my goal to get thrown off of a track due to going to fast and not having saftey equipment. But after the helmet they won't yell at you till you hit mid 11's depending on the race track association.
:hurray: Someday I'll see how my 86 fares on the track. I did try the 1/4 mile pass with moates program running. It said 13.82. I wonder how close to the truth that really is.
What are the rules for a coupe at the track I know it is diff. form a vert I just dont know what.
I have never had the chance to take my car to the track :cry hope to as soon as I can is there a specific helmet I would need. Man I hope my mods will show me some good ET's if I ever get there.

Don't know about your track, I know that here, in a coupe if you're 13.9 or faster you have to wear a helmet... in a vert usually they make you wear one if you're under 15.9 I believe here..... roll bars come into play at 12 and 11 seconds I think, convert and coupe.... Like 10s or 9s I think they said you need a chute or something?? I dunno the rest.
good job! here is a list of my mods and times for a pretty much stock 87 Coupe. i'd say drop down to 20 psi in the rear tires and do the easy mods like the throttle body bypass, descreen your maf unit, cut lid w/ K&N filter, add the 160 T-Stat and play with your timing with a good fresh tuneup! that should net you a good 13.8 pass or quicker. stall the converter out to 1300-1400 rpm and you'll hit easy 1.9x 60' times with 20 psi in the tires. with some cheap mods and alot of tuning you can get that car down in the low 13's easily
My 87 Coupe
Current Mods:
Mostly stock all free mods K&N open air box, MAF descreened, TB Bypassed, 160* T-Stat, Accel Super Coil, 12* degree advance timing, new front Y pipe with no pre-cats, and No Mufflers. Hayden Tranny cooler. Stock 1600 rpm stall and a 2.59 rear gear.
Best 60' 1.825 on Street Tires!
Best ET 13.264
Best MPH 104.65
BTW for the rules NHRA lists them as 13.99 or faster for verts need roll bar. 11.99 or faster for hard tops. IHRA is 11.49 for hardtops not sure about verts.
just need a SNELL helmet or an ANSI. you can buy a motocross helmet and they will let you run. don't need anything fancy. 9-10 they won't even check for ratings.
Have you ever gotten a dyno before and after your mods? I'll bet you're lucky if you see a 8-10HP gain with all of that. Removing the frisbee frees the centrifical force necc to turn extra weight and will probably allow the motor to turn a little quicker but will not show up as any HP gain.
If you're using some ET/mph/HP calculator, I assure you it will be different in real life. You wouldn't get 40HP out of a set of headers and I assure you that a set of headers will do more than the mods you listed.
No flame, just being realistic. I wish it were that easy.
C4 Newbie, no offense taken; healthy skepticism is the way when it comes to mods claims. :yesnod:
I base most of my mods results on weather corrected trap speed & car weight data. Eventually I got some dyno pulls, which agreed well with trap speed data taken within 1/2hr prior to the dyno pulls.
At the time of the 1st set of dyno pulls my L98 was running close to 300chp. Weather corrected trap speed when it was bone stock (down to the Fram air filter) showed that it was only building around 228chp (as opposed to the rated 240chp). These results show that my "simple mods" have added about 70chp. So I firmly believe that the "free mods" can realy wake up a late Vette L98.
You can also check out reluts of mods from Vit'89; he too keeps track of results of mods. His data shows similar excellent results from relatively simple mods. You will note that his bone stock data is better than mine which, even with his 3.07 gears, tells me that his L98 was stronger than mine when we started mods.
There is a table of expected L98 mods results data which seem to be very realistic. For example I'm expecting to pick up about 18chp from FL headers, 30chp form ZZ-9 and 25chp from ported/worked #113s.
Great ET, good post! Amazingly addictive isn't it? :auto:
NHRA states that it must be Snell 1995A or higher, although all you'll find now are Snell 2000A. The motorcycle helmets aren't approved and some tracks check. You can get em cheap at Summit or at http://www.racerwholesale.com/ . You don't need a full face but hey, it's your face so do what you think is best. Hope you two have the same size head.
