I have wrestled the O/D unit out from under my '88 in prep for it's rebuilding. There is a plastic tube about 3 inches tall bolted to the right side of the "pan". It stands straight up and has nothing in it, it's open right into the unit with a 3/8 (roughly) opening. Previous owner has plugged it up w/ silicone. I asked about this before and was told it was a vent and should remain open. I found a vent atop the tail houseing with a hose attached. Could there have been some confusion as to what we were discussing before?

Thats wierd sounding. The only thing that should be there is the vent tube on the top of the tailhousing that vents up into the engine compartment and then also another vent on top of the 4-speed part.
Yeah, I found that stuff, but this thing is different. I will try to borrow a digital camera and post a pic, but don't hold your breath. I'm techno-impaired.

Re: 4+3 re-visited (Gearheadotaku)
Put the url of your pics between the [IMG] tags.
There's a throttle valve cable on this side, but I don't know of anything else. Perhaps the previous owner put in a tranny temp sensor and plugged it back up.
is it possible this was where a throttle valve cable once was?? my 85 has the cable on the right side.. did later model yrs not have the cable and you have an older OD unit?

There's a vent tube attached to the pan? The small pan that goes on the bottom of the OD unit? Does it look factory? I've never seen that before, sounds almost like someone added a filler tube to it...Hmmm..

Re: 4+3 re-visited (Gearheadotaku)
I sent you some pics via e-mail. At least I figured that out.
Yes, that's the throttle valve cable connection. I'm baffled though. The '88 didn't come with a TV cable, but I'm not sure if the 4+3s had provisions for it anyways.
Perhaps you have an older overdrive unit on your '88. But, then my next question would be... will an older overdrive (w/ TV cable) function properly on a newer 4+3 car without the TV cable on the throttle linkage?
Scorp, does your '87 have the TV cable? If not, what do you have on the passenger side of your overdrive unit where the TV cable would go?
It seems possoble that I could have an older O/D unit under here. There is a lot of non-OEM rtv on things, its been apart once before. Anyone else have any thoughts as to an old O/D will work on a later car? :banghead:

Re: 4+3 re-visited (RonJ)
A question about the 4+3, my 85 uses a TV cable, does the cable determine when the o/d will kick out under acceleration or is that ECM controlled??
Thanks!!!
The TV cable controls the kickdown, at least in part, on the older units. I suppose this was eliminated since the TPS already knows the throttle level right?
