You might want a locksmith to pull the ignition and check it out. In my '87 it didn't stay in acc. mode, just popped back into lock position. The problem ended up being the wires coming from the passkey reader in the ignition getting caught up. I started also having problems with the theft system killing the ignition when I tried cranking it over. It ended up cutting right through the wires . Had to get a whole new ignition. Fortunately the ex-girlfriend's dad is a locksmith and actually had an ignition for the vette in stock (box was covered in dust, thought he'd never sell it), so I got it for a good deal.
