Default What coil for GM HEI?

Who makes a decent coil for a MSD-6 to operate, that fits under my car's stock distributor cover? I find quite a few "Hot" coils that will fit the stock HEI distributor in my 1986 Corvette, but they all are too tall for the cover. There must be something out there!

Thanks,
George

George, I am using an MSD HEI coil that fits under the stock HEI cover. I would highly suggest you get the MSD Low Resistance HEI Bushing in combination with your MSD-6 and that coil. The stock bushing is high resistance and builds up excess heat killing the coil very prematurely.

42,000 volts http://www.msdignition.com/coil_blaster_7.htm
Part#: 8225

Combine it with an MSD ignition box and watch out though. :D

Other MSD HEI parts are here....

Scorp, someone posted or I read in one of the mags that the digital tach needs the high resistance bushing in order for the tach to work correctly.

So is that just another example of mis-information?

Then there's the issue of white coil wire or yellow. I've gotten conflicting information on which one is the correct one to use. If I remember correctly, if your stock one is one of the colors, you can use either white or yellow, but if your stock wire color is the other, you must use the same color.

If I remember correctly, it's the color of the pickup coil wire that is the determining factor as to which wire color you get on the coil.

Now I've got to go look up which color is which. I remember writing it down somewhere, just got to try to remember where.

George, you really ask some toughies, lol.

Jake

Does the module also have to be replaced? Or is the stock one sufficient.

1. My tach has been fine with the low resistance bushing.

2. The wire colors really don't matter from what I've seen. The MSD HEI coil is only offered with red/white anyways.

3. The stock module is sufficient. If you are using an MSD (or other) ignition box the module is mainly bypassed and only used for triggering.
