I recently installed all new Auto Meter guages in my '76 ('95 LT1 engine) and am concerned about their accuracy. Cruising along, I was surprised to see the Water Temp approaching 230', then plugged in the AutoXray to get a more reasonable 207'.
I know the AutoMeter mechanical gauge is reading from the head (between cyl's 6 & 8 on my setup), while AutoXray is reading the PCM's data taken from the sensor on the water pump, BUT isn't 23' quite a bit of difference?
What do you think the difference in temp betwen these two places should be?
I just looked up some old Auto-Xray scans from 10/15/00 (should have been cool weather) and noticed that they show coolant temp leveled off around 185deg F; I run a 160 deg F stat & fan switch. So dashboard temps would have been around 155-160 deg F.
It seems that my ECM is seeing coolant temps about 25-30deg F above the dash indicator too.
Hmmm, it would seem that running a 160 deg stat still gets oil temps up into the 185deg F range or maybe higher. I guess the "too cool" criticism of running a 160 deg F stat may not be valid after all. Thanks for this question.
This really pisses me off. I hate how we have multiple sensors for the same thing. My dashboard typically displays anywhere from 10-25* hotter temps than the scanner picks up from the ECM. I don't know if this is because of the location differences for the 2 sensors or if the 2 sensors are just not calibrated the same.
