I just tried recovering the ECM codes from my 88 following the instructions posted on c4vette.com. They say that you first get a set of 12 flashes as a delimiter (beginning and end of string), but I go a set of 9 flashes.
It went: 9 flashes (3 sets of 3), then 18 flashes (3 sets of 6). It repeated this 9 and 18 flashes for five sequences before I turned the key off.
The instructions said that it would flash each code three times, the "12" delimiter code three times and then each stored code three times. This is not what happened.
Anyone have experience with this type of problem? I would appreciate any feedback.
You can't count! What they mean by 12 is: flash (space) flash flash. That is; you count the flashes and start over after a space. The 18 flashes you describe is the stored error code that tells you where to look for your problem, only the next time count the flashes and start over after the space. I think you got an error code of 33 which is a mass air flow in excess of 45 grams per second. You need to do the tests in the service manual for a code 33.
And if you have no error code stored, it will continue to flash (short pause) flash flash (long pause) until you remove the jumper or turn off the ignition key.
You can't read. I said the display flashed 3 sets of the 3 flash code instead of 4 sets of the 3 flash code as described in the instructions. Four sets of the three flashes equals 12, three sets of the three flashes equals 9.
