Just this past week, I've had trouble bringing my '89 Coupe (L98/Auto) to a stop. At first I thought the brakes were fading. Then it dawned on me that the engine idle is not coming down as I start to slow. So as I'm applying the brakes, the higher RPM's are trying to keep it rolling. It's got a Hypertech chip in it (was there when I bought the car).
Even at a complete stop the idle varies between 800 and 1200 RPMs. Is there something common that's causing this?

I'm sure that you mean .8k and 1.2k.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist that one.

Yep, thanks I corrected it.

Check you TPS sensor. Mine went bad and the car idled way high. Also this could be a Throttle Body problem .Have you touched the owl screw? There is a very good TECH TIP on how to set and ajust your TPS and Owl screw for a base idle.
Make sure that the throttle body blades are closing all the way. The IAC should handle the air flow at idle. Your TB and IAC make need a little cleaning.
