Default Teach Me...

If I am running 5w/30 penz. and the oil is 5wt. when it is cold and 30 wt. when it is hot, then why do I have no lifter noise cold and lots when it is hot?? :rolleyes:

The oil is 5-30 no matter what the temp. If you don't live in a cold climate go to 10-30 or even 10-40. It might make you happier. :)

The oil isnt the only thing that changes when a motor heats up. Your valves may be set just a shade loose and wen the motor warms up the expansion of the metals is just enough to make the little clatter go away. this is not a problem unless it gets out of hand. :chevy

The chemistry of oil is a complicated subject. That includes viscosity numbers. The multi weight oils don't have a constant viscosity. Nor are they less viscous when cold. They are supposed to have less a varience than straight weights over the tempeture range. Unless you have very tight bearing clearences, I would try a 10w-30 or even a 10w-40. That alone may qiuet your valve train. Good luck, and...
