What do you mean by hard to start? Does the starter crank the engine but it won't catch and run or doesn't the starter crank the engine? Is the dash just dark but the dash instruments work and can be seen if you shine a flashlight on them? Need more info. The battery ground goes to the frame and a wire goes from the frame connection to the rear of the left head.

Excellent and thanks, I know about those grounds for sure, I did not know if there were more grounds in the car cabin or not.
Fixed a similar problem with my '85 last weekend. It would hardly crank over when hot (like the battery was flat) - I replaced the earth lead and no more problems.
To check if it the earth lead, connect a jumper cable from the -ve terminal to the engine and if it starts easier then that is the culprit.
