Out of the car will make it a lot easier. About their statement of using standard tools, yea right! I never could find any long nose snap ring pliers. I ended up filing down the ends of a pair of needle nose pliers to use. 'Course, I was upside down on my back under the car while trying to use those, you may have an easier time.
I've read where some guys have had problems getting the car to shift into 3rd or OD (can't remember which one) It had something to do with the springs. My Trans-Go was slightly modified to rectify this. I think my stock springs may have been used.
I installed the hi perf. transgo into my 4L60E but obviously did something wrong and it died. Whatever you do don't assume it'll get better with time. If it slips at all then stop and contact Transgo before driving it. Double check everything before you button it up, and m,ake sure you get the boost valve all the way in, when properly seated it should travel no more than an 1/8 of an inch.
The shop that did the rebuild wanted the old parts back, said that some of the transgo parts are junk. After seeing the difference for myself I have to agree.
TransGo makes some of the best shift kits and certainly they was one of the earliest shift kit pioneers. Follow the instructions to the letter. Be prepared to have a inch/pound torque wrench to torque the valve body back in place. Proper torque on the valve body is necessary for proper gasket sealing.
Be especially careful about making sure that any and all chips and dirt is removed from the vale body before reassembly. One small piece of grit will stick a valve and it won't shift right. I have done several 4L80E transmissions in GM trucks and installing the HD kit rquires some drilling of passages to the valve body. Installing a HD kit in the 4L60E will require some drilling as well, so have some compressed air and lots of spray brake cleaner ready to clean out all the passages before disassembly.
Oh and one other thing, if you do happen to need decimal drill bits that didn't come with the kit, because they don't always provide them, you can get them at Sears Hardware. Search Google for a fractional to decimal conversion chart to get the bits you need. I had to buy 3 bits to do mine correctly according to the instructions.
I rebuilt my whole tranny when I installed the kit. It wasn't bad at all...just be careful to read and re-read all instructions carefully. There are holes you have to drill in the plate that you can ruin if it is in the wrong place. Also...use LINT FREE paper towels(the blue ones) and not rags. The little minute pieces of lint will clog it up. Make sure you use Vasoline or tranny gel. And for your own sake....KEEP EVERYTHING CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN...spray each piece with carb cleaner before installation.
Good Luck!!!
Re: transgo shift kit, are you happy with the results? (NASCAR314)
I love mine and yes would do it again. Much firmer shifts and can chirp in 1-2 and 2-3 changes. Does not add HP but sure feels like it. The only thing I did that I don't care for right now is that I put a 2400 stall converter which causes it to feel too "loose" for me but I bought it with future mods in mind.
Go ahead and get it done...you won't be disappointed...and from what others have said...transgo is the only way to go!!!
I have a TransGO like shift kit in my 700R/4 and love the change from stock shifts.
Since you have the tranny out, install a 2,000rpm TC. It's just a little looser than your stock 1,400-1,500rpm TC; it still feels tight under normal driving but realy enhances launches.
i put one of these in my 78 vette. the car was nice but needed a nice little kick in the pants. that was it. took bout 2 hours to install and bout $45 with fluid and all. awesome improvement. car would side step in second and bark into third at 90mph! pretty fun to drive. only bad thing is that i ate tires alot quicker and i ended up having to replace my flexplate, $20. it broke from all the torque. and my car was the 185 hp L48 350 turd. fast enough but needed more. i wont own another auto without a shift improver in it. :steering:
