Default CD Player Skips on Bumpy Roads?

Any way I can stop my CD Player from Skipping on Road Bumps.? Might be just a cheap Player. $250.00 Pioneer? Should I place it on Foam? or something?

My aftermarket player skips too. I was told that mine needed to get the laser realigned. I haven't bothered to do it yet.

I tell you what, my cheaper Sony changer does really well on my wash board roads. I guess it comes down to buffer size in these units? hmmm I also have mine in the passenger side compartment. I had to move the jack to the engine bay.

With the roads down here in Louisiana, it aint gonna do you any good, just get used to the skipping unless you have a real el cheapo player and want to upgrade.

Mine is a Jensen 3-disc changer, I can get thru one or 2 songs consecutively, but not much further here in Baton Rouge.

Geaux Tigers...
Charlie your right...Pot Hole City in Mandeville also.
Mine is a single Jensen. Either I'll get a Cassette or maybe put a changer in the back on a pillow.

Make sure it's mounted TIGHT to the dash (both ends) , sometimes the face is solid & the other end is loose inside the dash.

I don't have that problem anymore; my head unit has a built-in harddrive. No skipage whatsoever. :hurray:

That's probably my problem..I don't have a rear support now that you mention it. I guess I'll have to fabricate one.?

It's just a piece of thin metal stock w/ a bunch of holes. Most head units come with it, or the install kit has it. You can figure out a bunch of ways to stiffen up the other end.

My problem is similar - my Bose cuts out when I hit a bump when I'm listening to a CD or the radio. On the highway it will sometimes cut out every 10-15 seconds or so. Sometimes the display goes dark - no display at all - for anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. The unit's already been repaired a couple times, so I hate to invest any more $$ in it.

Any ideas on what might be the problem are appreciated!

Yours sounds like a power supply problem or loose connection - I am not a car audio repair guy, just guessing.

The cheaper units do skip. I bought a Sony MP3 player for the vette and when I play MP3's it doesn't skip but when I play audio CD's it will do the occasional skip. They have gotten 100xs better for skipping in the last 15 years though. Oh and cold weather makes em skip more too, at least until the car warms up inside.

I swear on my word, I live a dirt road, and its wash board to he** & back, and it doesn't skip a beat. Again it's a Sony 10 disk cd changer; I bought 5 years ago, mounted where the stock jack goes. It is one of those RF modulator deals, so where its at is perfect since thats where the antennae goes into the main unit.
I remember the player itself is suspended inside the case, by springs or something to dampen any shocks.

From what I've been told, the newer units (even reasonably priced ones) should handle most bumps without skipping... unless your driving over the equivalent of a railroad track (hey, maybe some of those southern roads are that bad!). However, if you want to make sure it doesn't skip, you can buy one with a buffer, like Lord Odin suggested.

Either I'll get a Cassette or maybe put a changer in the back on a pillow.
I've tried this type of approach with a portable player years ago... it actually made it worse! The player didn't weigh enough for the pillow to absorb the shocks. The only thing that worked, in that case, was putting the player in my lap.

I have a changer in my truck and they are supposed to be better at handling the shocks. But the one I've got is more sensitive than the head unit! I took it in for service and it's worse now than when I took it in! Either it wasn't serviced properly or it's a lemon unit. I'm going to get it in again before the warranty expires.

If the deck is still under warranty, I'd get it serviced. If you're going to have to pay for service, then I'd recommend just buying a new deck (installation is usually included)... it just costs too much to service electronics these days. And they are getting to be so much less expensive that 2-3 year old units are just becoming throw-aways.

If you want to keep your stock deck, I'd consider getting a replacement from a wrecking yard (or GM if your wallet is deep).

Good luck to all of you.

My Alpine skips all the time, I think I'm just going to upgrade to a 40 gig hard drive and not worry anymore. :smash:
