Just about done with the cage install in the GS. It's a S&W kit that was supposed to be made for the car but I had to cut and renotch every bar and bend the door bars for the seats and door panels (that were also supposed to fit right in) I have to clean the seats and get the 5-point harnes yet, and I need to pull the motor/trans/rear out so the console needs to wait :D I also need to do some carpet trimming and finishing.
The start of it all :D
Bent aound the door panel and seat back.
Do you drive this car on the street? If so, all I keep thinking is "And I thought these cars were tough to get in and out of BEFORE??".. Wow. Nice looking cage though

Looks like you had to take a little bit of the interior out there!! :jester
Looks like it's worth the effort though, How much cheaper was doing the install yourself verses getting it done? I am asking cause it looks like a heck a lot of work.
Hey Rich,
you're doing great fabrication installation there. I can appreciate what you're going thru. I too ordered a 10 point from S&W. Mild steel. Tore out the interior of my 89 and mocked up the cage inside the car. I could not figure out how they wanted me to install the thing. I called and spoke with Scott Weney and he sent me these pics of how:
I did not like how they tie into the 3 bolts that hold the dog bone bracket on the other side. IMHO the strong points of the car are the small triangle perches on the b pillars. Behind the coat hangars. The door bars don't quite fit as you know. I have since decided to get chrome moly for the weight savings.
So......... damn good job you're doing there! Curious to hear your comments on how the car handles afterward.
here's mine now :D
(if someone is interested, I wanna sell it for $150.00:nopity)
Paul, That's pretty much how the kit looked when I picked it up. I cut alot off the hoop and welded it to the point you describe. That is where all the others put them also. I didn't use the 2 bars that were to go from the seat back cross bar to the trans tunnel.
As for cost I paid $440 for the kit. I paid extra for the chrome molly bars to save 30pnd over the standard mild steel, and the 2 swingout kits were around $35 ea. So not bad for a payout of $440. I feel I saved about $1000 doing it myself. It seems the going rate of dropping your car off and picking it up when complete runs from $1300-2000 depending on who does it and what options you want.
