Because it'll make you feel bad. Heading out to take my son to swim team practice this evening, coolant temp around 60F... drops down to 4 and 5 mpg as I'm accelerating up to about 50mph, with a light moderate foot (I'm easier on it when oil temp is low)
Oh well, my average mpg readout still shows 18.3 (2.59's)... :)
Re: Don't watch instant MPG readout when engine cold (Goldwolf)
Well, I live outside of the city with not to many lights, and my average is about 20mpg. I can't even believe it, but I guess after the initial WOT blast followed by the trade mark bow-whip coming off a left turn w/the older crowd running for cover, and the younger crowd giving approval - its all cruise from there.
When I was city, yeap about 15 or so.
Good point. Actually the original window sticker's EPA estimate was 17 city and 28 (??) highway, so around town anything over 17 avg mpg is a bonus I guess :)
I believe it is driving habits. When I picked up my 94 it was reading 23.5 average. I have managed to get that down to 20.2 in just a week. My 86 with the 3.07 would average 18.5 daily driving and 22 on a road trip. I could get the instant down to 2 on the 86.
The worst I ever did was 8.5 mpg for a 3/4 tank around town. Thats actual too, not the dash average, but straight from the pump measured against miles.
However, the best I ever did was 32 on a long trip.
I don't watch the instant, I'm pretty sure it'd say, "WT.F"
I put it on instant once in a while to see how high I can get it and whats the best speed/RPM for mpg. Sometimes on cruise control, I'll try to be very light on the steering and that is usually good for one more MPH. Ive even drafted on the highway to check out the diff (again 1 mpg).
Whats said is lately I've had to share the droptop with the wife because in the morning i drive the kids to school in the SuBURPan. Before she was driving it, I was avereging around 16.9 mpg. Now its around 14.5 mpg!
I asked her what the hell she is doing to the car. Her response...
"I floor it alot"! :yesnod:
