Just installed some Panther Carbotech pads. Feel good, cold and hot, but after I bedded them in I am getting a pretty constant squealing noise. Sounds like the pads are always just slightly rubbing the rotors. It only starts after a couple good stops, then it is constant. A high pitched whine. Doesn't feel like they are actually engaged, just the noise. If I am at highway speed it is just barely noticeable, and if I hit the brakes it stops then returns after about 10 seconds. I could live with it, but is a little annoying when driving into a parking lot, then it seems obnoxiously loud.
So my question is this "normal" for race-type pads, or is there something I should check for that is making this noise. Only other thing I could think of is I didn't get all the air out of the system, which is keeping the piston from completely retracting, but I defer to those with more knowledge on the subject.
I'm suffering the same noises from my Porterfield pads. The stock pads were dead quiet before the switch, so I really believe that these type of pads are noisy.
At least I'm not the only one. When they said would have more brake noise I just assumed when braking, not whenever the wheels where moving. Oh well, I can live with it given the much improved braking response.
There's a tech tip on squeaky brakes where you pull off the pads and spray some blue goopy stuff on the back side. The idea is that squeal is from hi frequency vibration of the pads against the back plate. The blue stuff is supposed to cure that vibration. I have a 95 that has pretty new pad (don't know what kind) and they squeak when applied lightly. The blue stuff helped, but has not totally cured it.
I used the tacky stuff on the back of the pads - I use it on all my cars, but these are the first pads that have squeaked.
Regarding the dust. The Porterfield R4S pads make lots of black dust. One short drive is enough to make you want to wash the wheels. I'm not complaining because I figure that while the pads are wearing quickly, the rotors are not. On the plus side, the stopping power is an improvement, with very good bite even when cold.
Carbotech Panther pad have a decent amount of dust, much more then stock. I already have a dark ring around the rim of my wheels. But that is to be expected.
I am pretty sure the noise is actually from the pad to rotor interface, as opposed to the caliper backing, thus the "goop" doesn't do much.
Next summer if I am driving a lot might get a second set of pads for regulat driving.
