Aux A/T Cooler add on
Is it possible to get "too much" cooling on an automatic transmission?
Does the transmission fluid need to reach a certain temperature to operate "in a normal operating temperature range"?
Should I install a early on temperature switch for the cooling fans 1st - before considering an aux transmission cooler (or do both in conjunction).
Should I consider installing a cooler for "normal" street driving, or is it only necessary for high performance driving ("racing")?
On my '90 - which side of the radiator would I mount the aux cooler? There does not appear to be any space on the fan side of the radiator - I am assuming that there is room on the air box side of the radiator (once I remove the shroud)...
Here's the feedback and suggestions I received from one vendor:
Northern states with Cold winters we suggest the LPD Tru-Cool coolers, which will allow a faster warm up in very cold weather.
# 4454 Tru-Cool LPD thin coolers $45.20
Cars, trucks & medium duty towing, GVW rating 18,000 lbs.
Low pressure drop cooler 7 1/4" x 11" x 3/4"
In the South, mild winters we suggest the Hayden coolers.
# 1677 Hayden Transaver Plus, medium duty $37.22
Gross vehicle weight to 20,000 lbs.
5 1/2" x 11" x 3/4" Medium duty driving, mid & full size cars & light towing
We only suggest using the Stacked Plate coolers on all late model cars with Overdrives.
A 1990 Corvett MAY need a T390 fitting kit, depending on the radiator installed.
Install Radiator first > Aux cooler > then back to trans

1) They recommended mid-size units - not the larger size I've seen in other postings.
2) They didn't recommend a stack-plate unit - which I've seen in other postings. (Doesn't my 4sp OD count?)
3) Another earlier post suggested:
Go to http://www.summitracing.com and do a search for B&M cooler in the text search. You should come up with a result that says "24,000 GVW, 11 in. x 6 in. x 1 1/2 in., transmission cooler" This should be what you need. Part# BMM-70264 Install is easy and takes less than an hour the hardest part is taking the bolts off of the radiator shroud.
I see that this is a stacked plate unit - any problem (per above)?
Keep your transmission from going south
The last thing you need in the middle of a race is a transmission going south because your trans cooler can't keep up. These B&M Super Coolers will solve that problem. These lightweight, aluminum coolers have an efficient "stacked plate" design with multiple cooling paths that gives them the cooling capacity of a larger fan and tube cooler--you can even use them as an engine oil cooler. And because they have a low pressure drop design, there is less oiling-system restriction. Available in both black and polished aluminum finishes.
