Default IAC - I'm so confused!

OK, I posted a topic here about idle problems and all the replies came back change the IAC. Well, I did that and the idle problems went away. But, does this thing have any other effect on the car?

I seem to have more power across the entire RPM range. My milage went from just under 25 to just over 28. What gives?

Doesn't IAC stand for something like Idle Air Control? Well, 3500 RPM ain't idle. :(

Indeed the IAC is used to control idle and no more.

However if the IAC were leaking in excess air the O2 sensor would so report and the ECM would add fuel to achieve a stoch ratio while in closed loop mode. This could lead to reduced mileage.

However, at WOT a leaking IAC could lead to a too lean mixture which would caused reduced power.

I am almost embarrased to say what it looked like. YECH :U The think was caked in some kind of black gunk and the inside of the throttle body was yuckie also. I got some carb cleaner and really got after everything.

Car sure does run stronger. :D

Just curious, what kind of fuel to you run? Do you stick to a specific brand or shop around for the best prices?

The reason I ask is your comment regarding the accumulation of black gunk. A friend and I had a long discussion about the effects of some brands causing more deposits than others. Not trying to hijack your post, just curious...

The Idle Air Control should not see any liquid fuel. The black stuff represents air contaminants and I suspect associated HC's from open intake valves on shut down. Being a dry intake system, not sure if fuel quality has major impact IAC maintenance. Sitting for long periods, IAC may tend to "gunk up" more, not good.

Darn cars give me a headache.

I just buy what is handy when I need gas. Never been really fussy.
