I am getting a rebuilt engine shipped to me next week and I am pondering some ideas. Its a 86 suburban engine thats been bored and rebuilt with FACTORY size parts. Question is I dont know if i should leave the cam that is in it now or buy a cam and put it in. I want to get more power but now looking for a race car. The guy i am getting it from dont know anything about the rebuild, its been a while since the rebuild. The engine has 3k since the rebuild and he said that it ran strong. Should i switch out the cam??? Also got any links for a good cam that will go right in with no other mods, and is not to much money???
Thanks

For a large SUV that is heavy like your old suburban I would recommend just a small "RV" style cam. Comp has a small extreme cam that would work well for that old 350. Its their XE250H grind with 206/212 duration and would work well with the stock engine. Or use an Edelbrok performer cam that is very similar. I have an old carbureted 77 Blazer that is my work truck and it has a Performer cam installed. It runs very well for what it is.
depending on what you are willing to put up with, what vehicle it goes in, desired hp, heads used, stall, gears, size of the motor and desired powerband
something inbetween a 200-315* intake durration with something between .460 and .800 inches of lift
exhuast should range will be similar.
expect 200- 2000hp. results will varry.
i want to say "now seriously" but i am pretty serious about the above
...to clear up any of the above...?
you should answer the following questions
what car? weight? engine size? desired power? intended use? powerband? gears? stall if any? trans? heads? head work? tire size? and anything else you can tell everyone here.
What intake and heads are you going to run?
If you are bolting on your stock 624 heads and retaining the crossfire then you have limmited selection and I would go with Comp Cams cross fire cam.
If you are running the Vortech heads and a carb then just pick the RPM range you want to run in and pick a CAM.
