What is required to stroke a motor to a 383
I have a 355 with forged flat top pistions already,is it just a matter of
changing the crank and rods. What parts from the 350 will
work with a 383? and if I buy the stuff balanced do I still have to send it to a machine shop for anything

No you cant use your pistons you have to get pistons for 383 but you can use your rods.

You have to get pistons, rings, crank, balancer and flexplate and when you get a crank you have to get it for the rods size that you have 5.7 because some cranks are made for 6.0 rods and same with the pistons, you need pistons for a 5.7 rods and not 6.0 rods. But some people want to use 6.0 rods.

I think you need to do some clearencing on the block so the rods don't wack it....

No you cant use your pistons you have to get pistons for 383 but you can use your rods.
You CAN use your 350 pistons. If you elect to use the 5.565" 400 rods, you can retain your existing 350 pistons. The whole rotating assembly needs to be balanced as a unit. Unless you buy it all from a single source, you cannot buy it, balanced. Therefore, once you get all the parts of the rotating assembly (including the flywheel/flexplate and damper) rounded up, you will have to have it balanced. Despite the disadvantages to using the 400 rods, cam clearence won't be one of them. If you are satisfied with the condition of your existing bores and rings, no further machining will be necessary. Check for connecting rod clearence at the block pan rail and the bottom of the cylinders. Touch up with a hand grinder, and go for it. With other than the 400 rods, you may have to grind on the rods for cam clearence, as well. Good luck, and...

RACE ON!!!

PS. To make a 383 you will have to change the crank, of course, the pistons OR rods, the flywheel/flexplate and the damper. If you opt for an expensive, "internal" balance job, you can forget the last two items. All other 350 parts may be retained.

CFI-EFI thanks for that piston info I did not know that you could use the stock pistons with the stock 400 rods, you allways lear something new on here.

you might have to look into the "small base circle" cam clearance issue.
As far as the "do it myself" in your title, It's just my experience that I can't trust anyone but myself when assembling(after all machining/cleaning of parts is done). Or at least be there at the shop when they assemble it so you can check clearances. Sorry, I'm jaded due to bad experiences with engine building shops. They can't spend the time that you can on your motor.

too bad the rod angle with 400 rods is terrible, b/c it would make it a good bit cheaper.
