Re: Does a ZZ4 cam require the GM melonized distributor gear? (gregfloyd)
Greg, yes the ZZ4 as with all GM Steel camshafts require the melonized distributor gear. For some reason GM didn't have their cams made with a cast gears. Their high performance rollers are mostly ground by Crane and Crane does offer pressed on cast distributor gears but GM didn't use this option. Most likely as a cost saver is my guess.
Re: Does a ZZ4 cam require the GM melonized distributor gear? (tjwong)
Ok then my second question... which will probably make me a bonehead... What gear was on a stock 1990 l98 vette.
I put a ZZ4 cam in my 90 I didnt change the gear on the distributor. Did I screw up? and if so have i screwed up the distributor gear? or the camshaft gear? Is this one of those thing that i will say that I learned the hard way ?heheh <grin>
Re: Does a ZZ4 cam require the GM melonized distributor gear? (gregfloyd)
I am not sure what was used in the earlier L98 roller cam engines. If you remove the distributor and take a look at the gear. If it was wrong there is going to be obvious extra wear on it. I would think that if the cam that came out of the engine was a steel cam then GM would have installed a melonized gear. From what I have seen in all the later model roller cam engines, the cams are all steel. This was also confirmed by my source at Sallee Chevrolet as well. If that is the case you should be OK.
