In addition to flow considerations, the x-pipe would weigh less. Seems to me that if the x-pipe actually flows less the resonator, the difference has to pretty insignificant at most. Most important is Hp/torque difference??
Sound/resonance would be different, not sure how the two options actually compare in this regard.
You'll really like the B&B system. When I got my 3" B&B system for my 92 vert, I had to do a little trimming on one pipe to get the fit just right but after that, everything lined right up. I think that B&B has changed some pipe lengths to resolve any fitment issues.
One thing I did not use was the wimpy 1" band clamps that came with the system. They just didn't have the strength to clamp the pipes to provide a tight seal and not allow the joints to move around. I used standard 3" muffler clamps on both ends of the resonator and 3" wide stainless steel band clamps on the muffler to rear pipe joint.
Make sure your X-brace is straight before starting the install. There is not a whole lot of clearance between the top of the X-brace and the bottom of the front pipes. Don't fully tighten the clamps until you get the pipes up as high as possible and re-install the brace. Then you can easily adjust the pipes and resonator for clearance around the X-brace and body and then finally tighten the clamps.
The system is easy to keep clean with just a little metal polish every so often. As somebody else pointed out, the resonance did drop after awhile. but initially it was prety rough at speeds around 50-60MPH in OD (I have an A4 in my v92 vert).
One other pointer, if you decide to go with the 3" exhaust, I strongly recommend having it all welded. I had a shop put it on originally and then when we removed the resonator (btw, resonator "h"'s in the middle too, forgot that). We used some cheap clamps to make do for a couple weeks (the u kind you can buy at Autozone) and well, leaving a car wash with a large slope, one of the bolts went down into the pavement and it hung up, I couldn't even move, by the time we finally got the car free the clamp was bent in half closing one of the pipes almost completely, and the other side buckled in because of the pressure from the clamp bending. Car sounded mean while it wasn't connected though :D Anyway, $70 later and I couldn't be happier, plus the welds look better too, it's a win-win situation.
I believe I'll weld it up (aft of the cats so I can remove it if necessary) after I get it set where I want it. Thanks for the tips. Oh, BTW, the Corsa clamps were awesome. Wish I could buy them to use, I think they're called Torca Clamps?
Hey George, I bet your car looks something like this:
Now, back to the issue at hand. When did you buy the B&B as they changed the muffler to reduce the resonance?
Except for the luggage rack, that's it!! It's clear we have good taste in color choice!!
I got my B&B system back in August of '98 so it's the early design of the mufflers and resonator. Over the years, the resonance has gotten somewhat better but that may be due to a buildup of exhaust carbon inside the system.
BowTieBlood has a good idea about welding the pipes. Because the system is SS, a complete weld of the pipe circumference with stainless rod would be pretty pricey but you can add some tack welds with regular steel rod and cover with a high-temp silver paint to keep from rusting.
c4cruiser: Thanks for the reply. I think my plan will be to install the system with clamps and take it to a muffler shop for a few tack welds and then bring it back home, remove the system and have this shop nearby, who is an ace at all types of welding, weld it completely. That way I can remove the entire system like the OEM. I do have a clutch that will have to come out soon.
You are so right. I helped Dilligas install his Corsa and it looks and sounds great. I just wish both tips were active.
If both tips were active on the Corsa, it would probably resonate.
:D
I don't think you're losing any HP. After all, the Corsa muffler is basically a straight pipe with a resonant, frequency specific chamber off to the side. It's that chamber that sends the unwanted exhaust frequencies back to the entrance of the pipe 180 degrees out of phase, thus cancelling them out. Quite an intelligent design, if you ask me. Beats the "Let's try this and see what happens" approach.
Hammerdown, I suggested to Corsa that they do away with the dummie tip and replace the dual tip with a LT1 type tip. They tought about it, but no change in future.
The clamps (Clampco) just don't make a good seal. I broke two doing retightning. You get the leaks stopped then in a few months they leak again. Either that or get the wide band stainless clamps, they make a good seal.
Also the welding eliminates a clutter appearance on the last joint to the mufflers.
Have you ordered it yet???
