There's a masonite-like piece (~3/16" thick) that the is the main backbone of the visor. The bracket and mirror are mounted to this piece. This backbone is sandwhiched between two larger pieces of cardboard. On one end, the cardboerd is 3-4 inches longer than the masonite and forms the ear. The cardboard eventually tears and results in the floppy ears.
So, as others have posted, you can jam something in there to keep the ears from flopping, you can have the visors recovered for ~$50/pair, or you can try and repair/recover them on your own. If I end up redoing them myself, you can bet I'll substitute something a little more rugged than cardboard for support.
yup, same winter project for me as well. my drivers side visor also makes annoying noise due to some sound pellet-like item rolling around when i make any turns, drives me a little nutz
Count me in on this one. Driver's side only but annoying as
the devil. I even folded mine up between the visor and roof
for a while to get it out of my face. I'm 6'1" so my view out
is immediately below the visor.
I just got annoyed with it after taking the visors off of my '86 for the same problem and bought a new pair for my '88 from TLD. They were worth it since they were brand new GM pieces and of the updated late C4 style. They even had the airbag warning on them.
I'm 5' 5", so I just took them off. Make a nice clean look on a convertible!
Welllll, it's true.
If you do have to replace them, I purchased a set from Ecklers for my father's '88 for like 60 or 70 bucks each... much cheaper and just as nice as the OEM ones.
For now, I'll just leave mine with the clean shaven look. (ahhh, nevermind)
I have had nothing but good luck with them. Their prices are very reasonable especially when compared to a lot of the other places out there. They list the repro visors for $75 each if yours has the lighted mirrors. Ecklers listed the lighted ones for $90 each.
I'd bet it's probably one of those deals like the $15 t/b bypass kit when you can go down to autozone and pick up a pair of hose clamps and a hose adapter for 3 bucks. But I don't know anyone that's tried the visor repair one.
For 6 bucks, even if it doesn't work, it might be worth trying in case it does. My visors were shot though, not just sagging, but the 16 years of use made them pretty rough looking.
Be sure to post how it turns out. It looks like it might be a stiff piece of material that slides into the visor through the hole that the metal rod goes into.
I was able to solve the floppy ear problem by inserting a piece of hacksaw blade. I inserted it through a hole in the cover where the metal support bar enters the visor. I pushed the piece of blade into position and then put in some glue (liquid nails) to hold it in place. This solved the floppy ear problem but I eventually decided the visors were a bit tacky looking and bought new ones from TLD.
