Re: high performance ignition coil for 96 vette? (SonnyinVA)
Sonny your 96 GM coil is a hotter coil than what MSD gives you as an aftermarket replacement. The inductance rating of that 96 coil was a much improved coil over the 92-95 coil. Which means it has an higher open circuit voltage output than the earlier coils. If you take a close look at a MSD replacement you will see that its identical to a 92-95 coil.
I run a 96 coil on my 95 blown 396 and have no ignition related problems whatsoever. And if you use that coil from Ecklers you will have to chop up your stock harness to accomadate a different type connector for the earlier style coil. I would be willing to bet that other than a blue colored body that coil would not offer any more open circuit voltage than a stock coil.
If you really want a hotter spark, get either a Crane Hi-6 or a MSD digital 6 ignition box and feed it with either a MSD voltage booster or a Kenne Bell Boosta-pump voltage booster. This will apply 16volts to the MSD or Crane box which would give you a much hotter spark with more voltage and current. Of course cost is going to be considerably more than just a coil replacement.
