Made a rather spirited pass on a two laner and next thing I know, my vette turned into a crop duster!!! First thought, head gasket :cry But temp stayed ok and plume behind subsided a bit. Limped home and put her up on jackstands. Definate explosion somewhere on driver side but nothing readily obvious. Put more fluid in, ran her and looked everywhere. No water in the oil, all hoses seemed fine. watched a game, came back out and saw a little puddle. Got under, looked up and a little drip from the small oil cooler hose next to the oil filter. Gave a litte squeeze, and ah ha!! The headers had melted it enough to where it blew out under pressure! Has this happened to anyone else with the Hooker 2149s? How can I better protect these hoses?
Those hoses are like any other coolant hoses on the car only worse. If they are 4 years old or older , they need to be replaced. Since these are under the car and out of sight, they tend to be overlooked at hose replacement time.
Welding shops sell a fiberglass fire proof cloth that you can wrap around the hoses. Its called Frazzel Cloth. Or you could use some header wrap which is basically the same stuff. Just shield the hose from the heat!
