Default Clutch specs. 89-93 vs. 94-96. Diff ??

Well, mine's going. (its always something with these cars, right?) So I'm looking through all the various catalogs and I see where a few aftermarket manufacturers (RAM , LUK) cut off their C4 clutch offerings at model year 1993. (five years into ZF production). Was there a big change to the 94-96 ZF which made its clutch unique ?

I currently am running a single-mass 153 tooth (4+3) flywheel, and I'm sure my original clutch would have had to been changed at that time (previous owner).

I will probably do it right this time and go with a Fidanza aluminum 153t flywheel, heavy duty clutch and pressure plate (RAM or Centerforce), replace the throwout bearing and pivot ball, then fill her up with RedLine.

Need some feedback guys. Thanks.

I'm in the market for a clutch, too. Here's what I've found out so far; I have the OEM flywheel and clutch. I had an oil leak when I bought it and have since fixed the leak, but not before the clutch got oil soaked. :( I'm hoping the OEM flywheel is not damaged, but if it is, I plan on replacing it with the Fidanza Dual-Mass Aluminum which must be matched balanced to the OEM flywheel. (Mine is a 92 and is not internally balanced) As far as the clutch replacement goes, I'm sticking with the OEM clutch as it is the same as the ZR1 clutch and I don't have over 400 HP. There is a lot of guys using Centerforce clutches that are not really satisfied  That's where I am right now. It still works as long as I don't try burnouts or power shifts.

The only difference in the 89-93 and the 94-96 is that the late model uses a different sized inside diameter throwout bearing. Other than that they are identical. The LT4 is supposed to have a little more holding power in the pressure plate but I have never seen proof.

McCleod makes a very nice replacement clutch. I personally will never run an aluminum flywheel though. Heard of too many of them coming apart.

 That could truely get ugly. I like my feet the way they are. Your words are always wise Vette92. Hays makes a nice billet steel model in 153t or 168t, maybe I'll check it out. Its a hundred bucks less anyway. BTW does Lakewood or anybody make a bellhousing for the ZF ? And, where would you recommend getting a McCleod clutch kit from ?

Thanks. I've done a few clutch / flywheel swaps with Mustangs, but the ZF with its differences and particulars has me going back to the drawing board. Especially considering mine has been slightly modified before.

Srick, I didn't know the Fidanza has to be balanced with some models, but I hadn't done that much research yet. And what kind of complaints are guys having with the Centerforce? (besides its too expensive).

If you look back a few weeks there is quite a few runs with guys saying that they don't last very long, but they were doing some serious drag racing.

I know of no aftermarket bellhousings for the ZF.

If you are looking at swapping to a single mass flywheel, the best option IMO is to get the Camaro setup from Chris May at Superior. (800-728-8267) Then just order the clutch disk/pressure plate/throwout bearing from Summit. You can call McCleod directly to get the right part numbers.

If you want a single source of all the parts, then McCleod also has a steel flywheel too, but it is a little more $. Just tell them it is stock balanced and they will probably send it where you can just bolt it on without having to worry about the balance.

If you want to stick with the dual mass flywheel, then you can just get a clutch disk/pressure plate/throwout bearing assembly and reuse the stock flywheel if it is in good shape.
