Have 72 with a HP383 with a 168 t flywheel Im having a very HARD time with the starter catching the(NEW) flywheel right. The (NEW)starter is a Hi Torque mini. It is eating the teeth up on the flywheel, the gear only hits the very end of the teeth of the flywheel. I have adjusted it removed it drilled the holes bigger still the starter gear is 1/4 to short??? I just finished a frame off on the car and now I cant start it :mad (Sorry this should of been in C3 Forum)
Did you shim it? I did the same thing on my truck, I chewed up the teeth on the flywheel because when I replaced the starter I failed to shim it properly.
I'm assuming you have the correct diameter flexplate/flywheel for the starter you're using.
You can connect 12 volts to the solenoid in a way that only allows the starter drive gear to kick out but NOT turn the flexplate/flywheel.
That way you can see how the drive gear extends.
Then you can shim the starter by placing starter shims, wheel alignment shims or even flat washers under one or both of the bolts (place shims between the starter and the block) to adjust the clearance.
Sometimes shim(s) under only one bolt will work, sometimes you need to place them under both bolts.
Just had to do this with a 434 using a hi-torque mini starter.
I agree with Mojo....you probably have shim problems. You have to adjust the clearance between the starter pinion and the flywheel. This is done with starter shims. I have a few in my tool box that are not needed. Let me know if you want them for only postage.
Shim your starter, Had the same problem last week,,, but I made the mistake of going and buying a new stater......... Well, the deal cost me 192.00 for the starter and .20 for a package of flat washers.......
I only needed the washers :banghead:
