Default Injector(s) Install Support (Help)

1987/L98 - Just got a set of stock injectors and had them cleaned and setup thru WitchHunter... Got my Helms... I've never replaced any injectors so wanted to check here first for any information on the removal and install.

Any tips/tricks, installation information would be greatly appreciated.

Before removing the upper clips that hold the injector into the fuel rail spray a little WD-40 and then push on the tab carefully as the clips break very easily. I like to push in a direction that would "close" the clip to avoid breakage.

Before installing the new injectors put a little motor oil onto the upper & lower O-rings to aid installation of the injector and minimize the chance of tearing an O-ring.

Oh, and I find it necessary to loop a piece of gas line hose between the fuel rail feed lines when disconnected to precent constant seepage. For me, just relieving tank pressure isn't enough.

Yep, James covered it for you. That's all there is to it.

I just wiggle mine a little as I apply hand pressure inserting the "O" rings and make sure all the old "O" rings have been removed from the fuel rail and manifold or you'll end up with a hard vacuum or fuel leak.

Ask me how I know.

You gotta be talkin personal experience... I take it that the "OLD" O-rings can get stuck in the fuel rails.. when your removing...

I had the lower o ring and part of an injector stuck in my manifold!! It was no problem getting it out. On my '85, the retaining clips have somewhat different ends, as I recall. Note which end goes in what direction to lock-unlock. That way you will have less of a chance of breaking them or warping them on re-install or removal. Rather easy once you get going. :seeya

Exactly!

Had a vacuum leak that took me days and untoll hours to track down. One of the "O" rings came off and remained in the intake when I pulled the injectors. I didn't catch it and after re-installing everything and firing it up again, I had a terrible idle.

Fell back on the old "squirt the water" trick which finally located the leak. The injector bungs were the last thing I decided to squirt and when I did, the engine stumbled, so I knew I'd found it.

So, as you can guess, that called for disassembling everything AGAIN to check it out and when I did I found the "O" ring.

Live and learn.
