Hey guys - I went on my honeymoon to Hawaii and when I returned home I went to start my mistress and I was shocked to learn that my clutch pedal had no resistance. I popped the hood and checked the clutch fluid and the resevoir is bone dry!! Now, I now my vette was jealous but come on!! I'm gonna tear into the system to figure out where the leak is coming from and how to fix it. It's close to Christmas and I don't want to spend a lot of money.
Anyhow, have you heard of this situation? Do the signs point to the master cylinder? If so, should I rebuild or by a new/rebuilt one?
Yes its happened to me a couple times. GM makes a JUNK slave cylinder. I have replaced 2 of them things in my car with less than 9000 miles on it. My car sits for long periods of time and like you I have found the clutch master cylinder empty with the pedal going to the floor. Replacing the slave cylinder and bleeding the sysytems cures it.
McCleod Industries is coming out with a new all aluminum billet slave cylinder for the C4's. I was told it was to be released about now, you may want to check with them and see if its available now. They also make a billet master cylinder and I know its available as its part of their clutch package when you buy one from them. I would replace both peices to retain the integrity of they clutch hydraulic system which has been traced to premature ZF problems. As per Bill B, the ZF Doc.
